The Great King (Excerpt)

.
“He’s wild you know. Not like a tame lion.”

The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe

Like the roaring waves of the ocean, God’s future actions are
unpredictable and uncontrolled by anyone. When Aslan is
described as wild and “not like a tame lion” we are reminded of the
supreme ascendancy of God.

The movie The Perfect Storm’s plot is about a crew of fishermen in
a swordfishing boat named Andrea Gail. They set out to the North
Atlantic for a major catch and instead find a convergence of three
storm fronts and a hurricane, which creates the “perfect storm.”

In the film, which is based on a true story, monstrous waves are
seen crashing down with great force while the fishing boat is tossed
and displaced ferociously amid the rolling waves. As I watched the
turbulent waves of the ocean moving with such great potency and
power, I was reminded of the incredible strength and awesome
sovereignty of God.

God can do whatever he wants, and the power he has is
incomprehensible.

In the Disney film of The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe we see
that even the Witch is barely able to stand in Aslan’s presence. No
one has any power over him—just like no one has any power over
God. He is the creator and is sovereign over all.

In scripture Christ is described in this way: “He is the image of the
invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For by him all things
were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible,
whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were
created by him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all
things hold together.”

We are also told that God will “roar like a lion” and that “when
he roars, his children will come trembling from the west” (Hosea
11:10, NIV), destroy the works of Satan (1 John 3:8), bring new
life (John 10:10) and lay down his life for the sheep (John 10:11).

Aslan, for Narnia, symbolizes Christ—a savior and king who ushers
in a new kingdom, brings eternal life, wipes away every tear, and
who displays the qualities of both a great lion and a sacrificial lamb.

Aslan, like Christ, willingly sacrificed his life in a demonstration
of love. Despite being a mighty lion whose thunderous roar
causes all to tremble and stand in awe, we find that he is definitely
motivated by love and that those who love him have nothing to
fear. His big paws—which can lash out without a moment’s notice
at the enemy—handle those in his care with much tenderness and
consideration.

He will cover you with feathers, and under his wings
you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield
and rampart. – Psalm 91:4 (NIV)

Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and
knowledge of God! How unsearchable his judgments,
and his paths beyond tracing out! Who has known
the mind of the Lord? Or who has been his counselor?
– Romans 11:33-34 (NIV)
