Many Names and Titles (excerpt)

“Aslan?” Said Mr. Beaver. “Why, don’t
you know? He’s the King.”

The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe

Aslan has many names and titles by which he is known. He is the
King, the Creator of Narnia, Son of the Great Emperor-beyond-the-
sea, the King of Beasts, and the Great Lion, who also comes to
be known as a savior.

With many names and titles comes much responsibility. Aslan is
given these names and titles because he inevitably is all of these
things. It makes sense that God would have many names and titles
as well. This is exactly what we find to be true in Christ.

In the book of Isaiah we find many names for Jesus. Isaiah 9:6,
which presents a prophecy that has been fulfilled in Christ, reads,
“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government
will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful
Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”

We discover that Jesus also is referred to as the King of Kings,
Lord of Lords, Alpha and the Omega, Author of Life, the Chief
Shepherd, Lamb of God, Son of God, Lion of Judah, and the
Savior. And these are just some of the names he is given in
scripture.

Some people we may know also have many titles and names that
they go by as well. When this occurs, the individual, though well
recognized and honored, has a lot to live up to. For instance,
Lance Armstrong is known as a bicyclist, a champion, an author,
a survivor, an advocate, a good citizen, a good father, etc. He has
accumulated many accolades and, through the years, many titles.
Because of this, people expect him to do and to be all of these
things.

Yet Armstrong and all of his accomplishments and awards are
nothing when compared to who God is and all that he has done.
Nothing and no one can compare with the preeminence of God.
How fortunate we are to have a God that has over 100 names—that
he can live up to and uphold—that exemplify his greatness to all.

Help us, O God our Savior, for the glory of your name;
deliver us and forgive our sins for your name’s sake.
– Psalm 79:9 (NIV)

O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all
the earth! You have set your glory above the heavens.
From the lips of children and infants you have ordained
praise because of your enemies, to silence the foe and
the avenger. When I consider your heavens, the work of
your fi ngers, the moon and the stars, which you have
set in place, what is man that you are mindful of him,
the son of man that you care for him? – Psalm 8:1-4
(NIV)
